Getting better...it's Sunday instead of the following Tuesday. That's practically Friday.
1. Being sick on a holiday stinks. Having your kid sick also, stinks double.
K came home from school Monday afternoon with a terrible headache and a fever. Unfortunately she had to languish in the nurses office for a while before they got in touch with someone to come and get her. I was just getting out of the pool and headed to the loccer room when Nicki stuck her head in and said, "CariP? Your husband is on the phone looking for you." My initial reaction was a gut clenching, panic stricken, "WHAT?" Followed by, "[Expletive] That can't be good." And finally concluding with, "Can you tell him I'll call him on my cell?" I went into the loccer room, called him with my heart beating about 150 beats a minute. "K's school called. She has a fever and needs to come home." Oh, is that all? Relief. I was afraid he had sliced off a finger or something. So B called the school and I got a quick shower and got dressed and went to fetch the sicko. She was, apparently, in good company, with several other kids in the nurses office with her. About that time, I realized that the swim through quick sand I had just finished was also accompanied by the feeling that my head was going to explode so we went home, made some soup, climbed under a blanket and laid on the couch watching day-time TV. I mostly laid there sweating and holding my head while being slow-cooked by my daughter sprawled across my lap. Even Pippi couldn't stand the heat and she loves being warm.
K moaned a lot and was very lethargic - very UN-K like. We put her to bed about 7pm and she was up a couple of times puking and complaining of the headache. She was also alternately freezing and roasting. My own exploding head continued and no one slept very well. Tuesday she claimed to be feeling better but we kept her home anyway and it was good that we did as her fever went up again. I sported a migraine to go with the exploding head but once I was appropriately medicated, that went away and I just managed the regular old headache. I had swim practice that evening, which was painful for everyone involved, but my Wednesday I was feeling much better.
Wednesday, K again claimed to be feeling better but was soon sprinting to the bathroom every 15 minutes while I plied her with gatorade and tea and ice water to keep her hydrated. She managed a few bites of soup for lunch, a few bites of rice for dinner, and was again in bed early but, thanks to 2 doses of immodium, slept through the night.
Thursday, the bathroom visits slowed down a bit until grand-mom broke out the shrimp and veggies and then we resumed the 15 minute bathroom runs through dinner and up until bed time. Two more doses of immodium again helped and she was fine all night. I however was miserable with a migraine. Again.
2. Shopping on black friday can be fun.
Since everyone was feeling better on Friday, K and I went to Boscov's to look for undershirts for B. We got there about 7:30, and by the time we left had picked up a couple of Christmas presents for E. and B. some socks for K and me and the undershirts we had gone for originally. It was a very successful day. That, however, was the extent of our shopping!
3. The whole off-BCPs=no migrain theory is blown.
I had 3 last week. Three more this week. I tried to manage them with motrin/alleve and ice, but there was no budging the pain and I ended up taking Imitrex. Tomorrow will be a call to the doctor to explain that, no, the extra sleeping isn't helping, but thanks for the advice. And by the way, have you NOTICED how many times you've renewed my Imitrex in the last 2 years?? I need...something. I can't stand this.
4. Friday I gave myself the gift of a clean-house.
After shopping K went over to her friend's house to play and I spent the better part of 6 hours cleaning. I got to play with my steamer and was really, really pleased with how the house looked when I was done.
5. Then I baked on Saturday and undid it all.
Four kinds of cookies (iced snowcaps, kitchen sink cookies, new peppermint twists, and the dreaded sugar cut-outs) and 1 batch of english muffin bread and the the kitchen and dining room were once again a mess. K had two different friends over which allowed me to focus on the baking and the cleaning up. And to repeatedly tell her that no, she couldn't try the cookies as a snack.
6. Washing dishes from all that baking makes one's hands a nasty mess.
7. In addition to watching WAY too much TV while convalesing this week, we also played approximately 900 games of yatzee. K won 98% of them.
